SECOND WORLD WAR Near Whitby Bannial Flatt Farm Incident took place on 3rd February 1940 A German Heinkel III which was the first enemy aircraft to be shot down over England on February 3, 1940. It was downed by a Spitfire piloted by Peter Townsend, later a Group Captain.
