Len Nicholls did a sponsored walk from Edinburgh to Gillingham in Medway to raise money for the Anthony Nolan Trust in June 1979. Anthony Nolan was born with an immune-deficiency disease called Wiscott-Aldrich syndrome and needed a bone marrow transplant to save his life. His mother Shirley Nolan set up the trust in 1974 to start a database of all types of donors and patients. Though Anthony died
