Ensign Ewart Sergeant Charles Ewart of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards became a national hero when he captured the Eagle and Standard of the invincible French regiment at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. In 1937, his old regiment had his body exhumed from Manchester and reburied at Edinburgh Castle. In December 1967, his body was removed from the Castle while maintenance work was carried out.
